Dryden rallies late to defeat Thunder Bay in OT and set new team mark for wins
DRYDEN, Minn. – A Braedyn Aubin power play goal with 39 seconds remaining in overtime lifted the Dryden GM Ice Dogs to a dramatic 2-1 come from behind triumph over the rival Thunder Bay North Stars Saturday in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Memorial Arena.
With the result, the GM Ice Dogs improved to a SIJHL-best 39-7-4-0 with the victory total also setting a new Dryden single-season record for most wins in one campaign.
The league mark for most decisions in a season was set by the North Stars back in 2005-06 when they had 50 against just two losses in a year in which they went on to capture both the SIJHL’s Bill Salonen Cup and the Dudley-Hewitt Cup Central Canada Jr. ‘A’ crown.
In Saturday’s match-up, Thunder Bay got on the board first as John Parrott notched his fifth of the season 6:19 into the contest.
It stayed 1-0 North Stars until the final minute of regulation, when with Dryden starter Patrick Zubick on the bench on favour of an extra attacker, the GM Ice Dogs tied it with 37 seconds remaining as Braden Allkins buried his league-leading 46th goal of the season to send the game into OT.
In the extra session, while up a man, the home side completed the comeback as Aubin won it during a man advantage as his 27th tally on the campaign ended it.
Dryden outshot Thunder Bay 38-29 on the night with Zubick picking up the win and Jordan Elliott suffering the OT setback.
The second place North Stars slipped to 27-15-6-0 overall.
Both clubs will meet once again Sunday afternoon back in Dryden at 3:30 p.m.
