Dryden starts strong, holds off Fort Frances rally in 5-4 win

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Dryden GM Ice Dogs stormed out to an early four-goal lead then withstood a Fort Frances Lakers comeback bid before prevailing 5-4 Tuesday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up at Ice for Kids Arena.

It was all Dryden in the opening period as they built a 3-0 lead before the game was eight and a half minutes old on markers from Eric Stout, Tristan Knott and Garrett Graham, which spelled a quick end to Lakers’ starter Billy Gorn’s night after just nine shots against.

Brandon Bodnar came in to replace Gorn after that and he was greeted by Stout’s second of the stanza at 15:34 to extend the visitors cushion.

Dylan Kooner got Fort Frances on the board 1:54 into the middle frame, but Stout countered 62 seconds later to hit a hat trick and notch his league-leading 18th effort of the season.

Battling back, the Lakers’ Matt Tustin tallied twice in the latter stages of the period to pull the home side to within two entering the third.

A Fort Frances power play allowed Tustin to add his third marker of the night at 6:02 of the final session, but that’s as close as they would get before time expired.

Woody Galbraith and Derek McPhail chipped in with two assists apiece for the GM Ice Dogs as did Maverick Lynes of the Lakers.

Ben Dennis picked up the win for Dryden stopping 23 of 27 along the way while Patrick Zubick handled all three attempts he saw in six minutes of relief.

Bodnar suffered the loss for Fort Frances after coming for Gorn as he gave up the final two GM Ice Dogs goals on 27 shots.
