Dylan Kooner’s hat trick leads Lakers over GM Ice Dogs in OT

DRYDEN, Ont. – Fort Frances Lakers’ captain Dylan Kooner’s third goal of the game, coming 1:38 into overtime, was the difference as the Fort Frances Lakers rallied to edge the Dryden GM Ice Dogs 6-5 Friday in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up at Memorial Arena.

Dryden opened the scoring 12:52 into the contest on a Trey Palmermo power play marker only to see Kooner notch his first of the night less than a minute later.

The GM Ice Dogs went back in front with five seconds left in the frame on a Braedyn Aubin effort.

Each side would tally twice in the next period with Maverick Lynes and Kooner connecting for Fort Frances while Jacen Bracko and William-Taylor Bucsis countered for Dryden.

Palermo added another for the home side in the third only to see Dawson Waddell force OT with 11:59 left in regulation.

Starting extra time three skaters aside it was Kooner that won it as he capped off his big night in dramatic fashion to give his side the second point in the game.

The suddenly resurgent Lakers have now won four straight games after beginning the season 2-8-1-2.

First place Dryden meanwhile still has not lost in regulation in seven consecutive games with their overall record sitting at 14-3-3-0.

Shots on goal were 42-33 in favour of the Lakers with Ryan Wagner picking up the win and Patrick Zubick the OT loss.
