Strong 3rd sends Dryden past Fort Frances

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Superior International Junior Hockey League-leading Dryden GM Ice Dogs broke open a one-goal game by striking for four unanswered markers in the third period to defeat the Fort Frances Lakers 6-1 Saturday at Ice for Kids Arena.

Dryden also started strong as they went in front two minutes after the opening face-off on a Kris Hamlin effort.

The GM Ice Dogs upped their lead late in the period as Garrett Graham picked up his eighth of the campaign at 18:22.

The lone tally of the middle stanza was supplied shorthanded by the Lakers’ Dylan Kooner at 7:07 as he found the back of the net for the 31st time this season.

It was all Dryden in the final frame however with Sam Marit starting the offensive outburst off at 3:22.

Hamlin’s second of the night and 18th overall made it 4-1 just past the eight-minute mark of the period.

Earning one of the assists on that goal was Braeden Allkins, who, with the helper, set a new GM Ice Dogs record for points in a season with his 90th of 2016-17.

That is now one more than the previous Dryden mark set by Cole Golka, who had 89 back in 2014-15.

Allkins broke Golka’s club record for goals in a season last weekend with his 48th, surpassing the previous total of 47 that was also established back in 2014-15.

Cory Dennis, on the power play, at 9:05 and Marit’s second of the evening in the late going rounded out the scoring.

Eric Stout and Nic Noseworthy dished out two assists each for Dryden in the triumph.

The GM Ice Dogs outshot Lakers 43-31 with Patrick Zubick picking up the win and Jessie Heisz the loss.
