Dryden defeats Fort Frances to open up play in 2019

DRYDEN, Ont. – Malcolm Huemmert scored twice and added an assist to help the Dryden GM Ice Dogs open the 2019 portion of their Superior International Junior Hockey League schedule with a 6-1 win over the visiting Fort Frances Lakers Saturday night at Memorial Arena.

Dryden didn’t waste any time getting going in this one as Rayman Bassi opened the scoring just 10 seconds into the contest.

Kevin Parra-Vaughan added to the GM Ice Dogs lead two minutes later while Huemmert made it 3-0 at 5:47 to spell an early end to Fort Frances starter Jacob Gnidziejko’s night in favour of back-up Matt Booth.

The score stayed that way until the final moments of the second stanza when the Lakers’ Jaedin Ness finished off a Reece Hopfner feed to make it a 3-1 score after two periods of play.

However, Dryden put the game away in the third to win going away as they tacked on three more markers to secure the home ice triumph.

Eric Stout’s 19th made it 4-1 midway through the final session before Jacob Siebenga and Huemmert rounded out the night’s scoring for the GM Ice Dogs.

Kyle Sargent and Evan Pakkala chipped in with two assists apiece to aid the winner’s offensive cause.

Jordan Wilde made 35 saves to earn the victory in net for Dryden who improved to 5-0-1 in their past six outings.

Gnidziejko suffered the loss, allowing three against on eight shots, while Booth handled 43 of 46 in lengthy relief for Fort Frances.
