Red Lake rallies to upend Dryden

DRYDEN, Ont. – The Red Lake Miners rallied from a second period deficit and came back with four unanswered goals to defeat the Dryden GM Ice Dogs 5-3 Wednesday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Memorial Arena.

With the result, the Miners secure the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Bill Salonen Cup playoffs and a first round bye.

An early power play helped Red Lake open the scoring as Dante Tisi buried one from the point three and a half minutes into the contest for his seventh of the season.

Dryden came back a couple shifts later to tie it though on a Malcom Huemmert effort.

Brody Nielsen then put the GM Ice Dogs in front late in the frame with his sixth since joining the club.

It was more home side early in the middle session as Huemmert jammed one in from close range for his second of the night and 19th overall.

Battling back in the final half of the stanza, the Miners countered to level the proceedings on markers from Shaye Sommerfeld and Ryan Patterson.

The visitors kept coming in the third and picked up the eventual game-winner midway through the session as Liam Stalwick was sent in all alone on a breakaway and made no mistake.

Then with a late man advantage and their goalie pulled for an additional attacker, it was Red Lake’s Sommerfeld that won the draw deep in his own zone back to defenceman Ty Lawrence, who banked a shot off the glass and down the length of the ice into the empty net at 19:37 to complete the comeback.

Dylan Winsor had two assists in a losing cause for the host.

Dryden out shot Red Lake 49-37 on the night with Zach Willms picking up the win while Jordan Wilde suffered the setback.
